Tim Bresnan is set to head to the United States to undergo an operation on his elbow next week, according to Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale.

The 27-year-old was left out of England’s squad for the spring tour of New Zealand due to a niggling elbow problem, which hampered his performances over the winter.

Gale, who is Bresnan’s Yorkshire team-mate and brother-in-law, revealed that the all-rounder has been back training with his county side this week ahead of his surgery, before heading state-side next week.

“He has been back in training with us just doing a little bit of running,” Gale told the Telegraph & Argus.

“He’s going out to America in the next week or so, and he’ll be there for a week or two to have an operation and then some rehab on his elbow.

“He might then come to Barbados on pre-season or he might not. But he’s certainly going to have to prove his fitness if he’s going to get back in the England side for that first Test match [against New Zealand], which is in the first or second week of May.

“Hopefully we will see a bit of him early in the season. That will be a bonus.”

Bresnan, who first underwent surgery on his elbow in 2011, will hoping to play a part in the Test series against New Zealand in May, before the eagerly-anticipated Ashes begin in the summer.
