Davide Santon says he is happy at Newcastle United despite reports linking the defender with a return to his native Italy.

The 21-year-old was impressive in his first season at the St James’ Park outfit, making 24 appearances for the Magpies following his £5.3m switch from Internazionale last August.

The Italy international was the subject of a bid from Roma this summer before AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi expressed his interest in full-back during the January transfer window.

However Santon is adamant he is not looking to return to Serie A, with the former Inter star hoping his Newcastle form can cement his place in the Italy set-up.

“At the moment this is the only place to play for me,” said Santon.

“There are not a lot of Italians in the Premier League, just Fabio Borini.

“The Premier League is better than Serie A and better than La Liga. The fans here are the best.

“Playing at Newcastle has also helped me get back into the Italy squad. My coach in Italy is happy with me and so is Mr Pardew. I will keep giving 100 per cent.”
