No room for complacency, Rafael Benitez warns Chelsea
Rafael Benítez warns Chelsea that there is no room for complacency ahead of the Blues' clash with Wigan on Saturday
Rafael Benítez has warned Chelsea that there is no room for complacency ahead of the Blues’ clash with Wigan on Saturday.
The west Londoners head into the game on the back of last weekend’s defeat by Newcastle at St James’ Park, where Benítez’s side were leading 2-1 in the second half before being pegged back and losing 3-2.
That loss left Chelsea just a point ahead of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table – and Benítez knows that his side can ill afford any more slip-ups if they are to cement Champions League qualification.
“We could win all the games we didn’t win,” said the Chelsea interim boss. “It’s a question of sometimes doing the right things at the right moment, a little bit of luck, being more clinical and not making mistakes in defence, but the team is doing well in terms of performance.
“We have to improve the results, especially in the games we were winning. We were training, practising, analysing but also working on the pitch and that’s the main things we can do.
“We are working on the solutions. If you can score two goals and be two up you have to finish the games, and you cannot make these mistakes. You have to be sure you control the game.”
The Spaniard added: “Every week is important for us, not just this one. We play two games a week and have to do our best in every game. Wigan will be important too and we start the Europa League next week. Every game will be important until the end of the season.
“All the games are difficult; all the teams are difficult to beat. They have won more points away and we now there is no room for complacency. We have to do the right things from the first minute to the last minute.”
