Oldham 2 Everton 2: Moyes says Latics ‘more than deserved’ replay
Oldham 2 Everton 2: David Moyes says their League One opponents "more than deserved" a replay after Matt Smith netted a late equaliser
David Moyes admitted Oldham Athletic “more than deserved” to get a second crack at reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals after Matt Smith’s late goal held Everton to a draw at Boundary Park.
The League One side took the lead in the 13th minute when on-loan Reading winger Jordan Obita fired past Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.
Unlike their Merseyside neighbours Liverpool in the fourth round, Everton bounced back courtesy of goals from Victor Ancichebe and Phil Jagielka either side of half-time.
With full-time approaching, Oldham allowed goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis to venture forward for a corner but it was Smith who headed past Howard to book a fifth-round replay on 27 February.
“I thought it was always going to be nip and tuck with five or 10 minutes to go because we didn’t get the third goal to kill it off,” Moyes told BBC Sport.
“I thought from the first corner that came in there was a foul on our keeper but it wasn’t given and Oldham more than deserved their replay. Credit to them.
“I know they hit the post but I didn’t think they had many other opportunities apart from when they scored – but there was always that chance it could happen.”
