Gareth Bale stole the show as his stunning late winner gave Tottenham victory at West Ham at Upton Park.

The Wales international opened the scoring, before Andy Caroll and Joe Cole put the Hammers in front a day after the 20th anniversary of Bobby Moore’s death.

However, Bale’s free-kick resulted in Gylfi Sigurdsson’s leveller before the Wales star scored a superb long-range strike to seal three points.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction, largely to Bale’s heroics, in chronological order.

England legend Peter Reid ‏(@reid6peter) reminds us all who this night is about despite Bale’s goals: “Fantastic #WHUFC. #greatbobbymoore.”

QPR defender Chris Samba (‏@cs4christsamba1) asks a very relevant question: “Can any one stop Bale? Becoming a great player game by game!”

Reading forward Noel Hunt (‏@boyhunt) feels Carroll has sold Howard Webb one with the spot-kick: “Not a peno for me but well taken Andy Carroll!! 1-1!”

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann) questions Hugo Lloris after Cole’s strike: “Not sure what Lloris was doing for Cole’s goal?!”

While former Spurs chairman Lord Sugar (‏@Lord_Sugar) is rather distraught: “Typical Spurs, whenever we have a chance to progress and go third, we let it go. Lose this game and lose Sunday and Arsenal go above us!”

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (‏@morriskid) is critical of Cole for picking up a cheap yellow: “I don’t care how carried away you get at a goal..to take your top OFF baffles me!!! Jumping into fans/over celebrating fair enough!!”

Former Fulham star Jay DeMerit ‏(@D6MERIT) agrees: “If you score and you take your shirt off Joe Cole, #Ugetacard.. Why do players still do that??? #Stupid”

Sky Sport’s Chris Kamara (‏@chris_kammy) is enjoying the spectacle: “Cracking game Sigurdsson makes it 2-2!”

Ireland legend Kevin Kilbane (‏@kdkilbane77) kick-starts the eulogising of Bale: “Seriously he is amazing!!”

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour (‏@RealRomfordPele) can’t resist a sly dig: “My god what a goal. One man team!”

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba (‏@fmuamba) reckons Bale is up there with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi: “Gareth Bale right now is up there with the best in the world. Great goal. #MNF”

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (‏@asmir1) is giving Tony Pulis some transfer advice: “Wish I put Gareth Bale into my fantasy team! #beastmode#rookiemistake”

Former West Ham defender Neil Ruddock (‏@RealRazor) is upset to see the Hammers miss out: “What a game, end to end Gareth Bale just seems to be able to make himself so much space and boy can he strike it, tough to take for the Hammers that.”

Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott ‏(@JoleonLescott) celebrates loudly – apparently: “I very nearly woke the kids up shouting at the TV after that Gareth Bale goal. #Madness”

Rangers striker Lee McCulloch ‏(@jiggymacc6) asks a relevant question: “Gareth Bale or a young Giggs? Tough one..Giggs was winning titles on his own and Bale is on flames!”

Finally, Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) feels West Ham were powerless to prevent that goal: “Gareth ‘scud foot’ Bale….what you doing to the Hammers maaaaaaaaan!”
