‘Roberto Mancini faces the sack if Man City lose to Leeds’
Former Manchester City defender Danny Mills believes Roberto Mancini will be sacked if his side lose to Leeds United in the FA Cup
Danny Mills believes Roberto Mancini will be sacked if Manchester City are eliminated from the FA Cup by Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
The defending Premier League champions are 12 points behind Manchester United in the title race and were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage before Christmas.
Mancini has guided City to one top-flight title and the FA Cup since replacing Mark Hughes at the Eastlands outfit in 2009 – and former Citizens star Mills feels that the Italian is on the brink.
“Mancini is under pressure,” said Mills. “It looks like they have blown their chances of retaining the title.
“You wonder what would happen if they went out of the FA Cup against Leeds. I think Roberto Mancini goes.”
He added: “Manchester United’s 12-point lead is too much. I think Mancini will go in the summer anyway if they don’t win the league.
“But, if they go out of the FA Cup at this stage, I could see the owners making a decision sooner than that.”
Mills also believes that Mancini’s style of management does not fit in with the City hierarchy’s plans for the Eastlands outfit.
“There’s a rumbling undercurrent of discontent at City,” said Mills.
“From the outside it all looks pretty and serene, but underneath there’s a bubbling inferno ready to explode.
“They have brought in Txiki Begiristain and the owners seem intent on creating this Barcelona model. They want success and that means Mancini is under a fair bit of pressure, especially after they failed miserably in the Champions League.”
