Santi Cazorla has urged his Arsenal team-mates to rise to the occasion when they take on top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The fifth-placed Gunners head into the game four points behind their local rivals and on the back of a Cazorla-inspired 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Victory for Spurs, who are currently third after their triumph at West Ham on Monday, would allow Andre Villas-Boas’s men to open up a seven-point lead on Arsenal with 10 games left to play.

And with both clubs vying for a spot in next season’s Champions League, the Spanish midfielder is relishing the opportunity to take on one of Arsenal’s top-four rivals as the season heads towards its climax.

“It’s very important, not just because it is a great rivalry or that it’s Tottenham versus Arsenal, but the fact that they’re a side with great players who are fighting with us for a top-four spot,” Cazorla, who scored both goals against Villa, told Arsenal Player.

“To beat them and get into the top four and the Champions League, which is our aim for the season, is essential. We know how important it is and I hope we can rise to the challenge.

“Like everyone else, I’m really looking forward to the match against Tottenham and I hope we can achieve our goal of fighting for a Champions League spot.

“It’s going to be a really difficult game but a great match to watch.”
