Scott Parker was lost for words after watching Gareth Bale’s stunning performances fire Tottenham Hotspur into third place in the Premier League table.

Bale racked up his 12th goal in 13 games for the north Londoners on Monday night as his stunning long-range strike gave Andre Villas-Boas’ men a 3-2 victory at West Ham after the Welshman opened the scoring at Upton Park.

Tottenham now head into Sunday’s north London derby against Arsenal at White Hart Lane knowing that victory will open up a seven-point lead over their local rivals.

And Parker credited Bale for “stepping up” after Spurs looked set to settle for a point against the Hammers.

“Words can’t describe how well he is playing,” Parker was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

“At the time I thought we were a bit sloppy and yet again he stepped up and got us three points. He is scoring critical goals which make headlines.

“When you have world-class players they step up to the fore.”

Parker is relishing the opportunity to help Spurs stretch their lead over Arsenal, which currently stands at four points, as they bid to bring Champions League football back to White Hart Lane.

“Tottenham, as a club, has been living in the shadows of Arsenal a bit,” he added.

“Arsenal is still a top side but certainly we have narrowed the gap. We have players in our squad that Arsenal would want any day of the week. It’s a big game for us. We can push away a little bit.

“You’d like to think that if we win we’d secure third place but last year proved that it’s not a given. Arsenal clawed it back last year. A win will put us in a good position. We’ve got Europa League and busy games coming up. We have to stay focused and keep going.

“If they beat us it goes to a point – fourth spot ain’t over yet. We have worked very hard to get where we are and we can’t afford to fall away.”
