Sparta Prague 0 Chelsea 1: Rafael Benítez warned his side that they must be more clinical in front of goal after Oscar nets winner
Rafael Benítez warned his Chelsea side that they must be more clinical in front of goal after substitute Oscar netted a late winner at Sparta Prague.
Oscar combined with Eden Hazard before firing into the bottom corner just 45 seconds after being introduced in the 82nd minute to give the Blues the advantage in the Europa League last 32 tie.
But the Brazilian’s winner added gloss to what was otherwise a drab affair, with the Blues guilty of failing to convert their chances in Prague.
“We started really well, in the first 20 minutes we were in control and we had some chances,” said the Chelsea interim boss after the game.
“After that they were pushing and we had some problems in defence. Individually the defenders were doing a great job, but as a team we had problems.
“We changed a few things in the second half and had more control, the concentration and intensity was much better.
“Eighteen attempts on goal away from home isn’t bad but we must be more clinical in attack.”
The Spaniard also called on his players to respect the Europa League after the Blues were parachuted down in Europe’s second tier club competition as a result of their Champions League failure.
He added: “This is the competition we have to play in now, the players have to realise it’s another opportunity to win a trophy.
“If we progress, they will see that, and hopefully we can keep the team playing well and winning games until the end.”
