Steven Gerrard excited to welcome Jack Wilshere back to England fold
England captain Steven Gerrard admits his excitement at midfielder Jack Wilshere's return to the international scene
Steven Gerrard has admitted his excitement at Jack Wilshere’s return to the international scene – and is backing the Arsenal midfielder to develop into a “top player” for the national side.
Wilshere is in line to earn his seventh England cap when the Three Lions take on Brazil in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday night.
The 21-year-old has been one of the Gunners’ top performers this season since making a successful return from the ankle and knee injuries that kept him out of action for the whole of the 2011-12 campaign.
And England captain Gerrard says he is thrilled to have the midfielder back in Roy Hodgson’s squad following his lengthy injury problems.
“If Jack Wilshere stays fit he has the capacity to be a top player for England and for Arsenal. The manager, myself and all the other players in the dressing room are excited to have him back.
“He has had a very disappointing time with injuries, and I felt for him because I have been there myself. Fingers crossed that he can avoid injuries in future, and can get a run of games.”
