Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger won’t rush Jack Wilshere return

Arsenal's Arsene Wenger says Jack Wilshere won't be rushed back to first-team action with the midfielder suffering from an ankle injury

Arsene Wenger says Arsenal will manage Jack Wilshere’s fitness carefully as the midfielder continues to recover from an ankle problem.

The 21-year-old missed Arsenal’s back-to-back victories over Bayern Munich and Swansea City, as well as England’s World Cup qualifiers, due to a “minor ankle inflammation”.

Wenger will be without Wilshere for Saturday’s game against Reading at The Emirates, and the Gunners boss insists he will not rush the England international back into action.

“We will rest him when it is needed,” Wenger said. “He has regular scans and as soon as we have an alert we will respect it no matter what is at stake.

“He had a difficult moment of course when you told him [he would be rested] because he didn’t feel any special pain. But he knows he has to take care of his future. Because he is a very young player, I think he accepts it.”

Having missed England’s 2014 World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro, Wilshere’s next opportunity to feature for the Three Lions will be in end-of-season friendlies.

Despite Wenger emphasising the need to protect his young star, the Arsenal boss will not prevent Wilshere from joining up with the England camp for the Republic of Ireland and Brazil games.

“If he is selected, he will go,” Wenger added. “It depends what kind of shape he will be in.

“It is a job where you need to play and where you have a physical gamble but he doesn’t need any special treatment. You just have to be cautious with the inflammations of his ankle sometimes but if he has no problem, why not?”
