Robert Pires believes Arsene Wenger needs to buy proven English players to help strengthen Arsenal’s squad.

The Gunners have endured a difficult season after being eliminated from all cup competitions and trailing Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for a top-four finish.

Despite all the negativity surrounding the club, Arsenal managed to tie down Kieran Gibbs, Carl Jenkinson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere on new long-term deals this term.

Pires played alongside experienced England internationals such as Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole during a decorated spell for the Gunners, which saw Wenger’s men win two Premier League titles and the FA Cup three times.

And the former France international urged Wenger to buy more experienced English players to help the club improve in coming seasons.

“The difference between Arsenal today and my generation is that we had a backbone of English players,” said Pires.

“The club has some very good [English] youngsters now but they lack experience.

“The only solution for Arsenal is to buy some more English players.”

Pires scored 84 goals in 284 appearances for the Gunners before moving to Villarreal in 2006.
