Arsenal transfers: Amorebieta ‘in contact with Gunners’ over move
Arsenal transfers: Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Amorebieta is in contact with the Gunners over a move, says the defender's brother
Fernando Amorebieta is in discussions with Arsenal over a potential summer move to The Emirates, according to the Athletic Bilbao defender’s brother.
The 27-year-old was a key member of the Bilbao side that reached the Copa del Rey and Europa League finals last season.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen his defensive options after a difficult season and the centre-half, who has eight caps for Venezuela, is one of his top targets.
However, Amorebieta, who has made over 250 appearances for Bilbao during his eight years in the first-team, is also being chased by cash-rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.
“We have had contacts with Anzhi [Makhachkala], who are very interested in his services, but given the desire to play in England, that move cannot take place,” the Venezuelan’s brother told Marca.
“We are in contact with Arsenal.”
Amorebieta has made 16 first-team appearances for Bilbao this season.
