Ashley Williams would be a great Liverpool signing, says Ian Rush
Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush urges Brendan Rodgers to sign Swansea City captain Ashley Williams in the summer
Ian Rush has urged Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to make a summer swoop for Swansea City captain Ashley Williams.
The Reds boss is searching for a long-term replacement for veteran Jamie Carragher, who is set to retire at the end of the season after a decorated 16-year career.
Rodgers, who spent two seasons at the Liberty Stadium, has been linked with a move for his former skipper Williams, who continues to impress for the Swans.
And former Liverpool striker Rush believes the Reds should sign his compatriot to help add more experience to Rodgers’s side.
“To get in Ashley Williams would be great,” said Rush told the Liverpool Echo.
“I’ve seen him play for Wales on a number of occasions and he is organised and a good captain.
“He knows what he is doing and the link to Liverpool is natural because Brendan Rodgers managed him at Swansea.
“At the right price Swansea would let him go although that they are in Europe next season may have a bearing on his decision.
“But he would be good for Liverpool with his experience.”
He added: “We need to replace not just what Jamie brings on the field but off it as well.
“Every team needs people like Carragher. At Liverpool we have Jamie and Stevie G.
“At United there’s Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and Chelsea have John Terry and Frank Lampard.”
