Ashley Williams would be a solid Liverpool signing, says Jan Molby
Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby reckons Swansea City's Ashley Williams would be a "solid summer signing" for the Reds
Jan Molby believes Swansea City captain Ashley Williams would be a “solid summer signing” for Liverpool.
Brendan Rodgers has been linked with a move for the Wales international at the end of the season, having worked with Williams during a two-year spell at
The Liverpool manager is keen to strengthen his centre-half options, with Jamie Carragher set to retire in May and Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel struggling for form.
And Molby, who won three top-flight titles at the Reds between 1985 and 1990, reckons Williams would be a good acquisition after an impressive season at the Swans.
“I saw my old mate Ian Rush was in the Liverpool Echo this week talking about Ashley Williams, and how he would make a solid summer signing for Liverpool,” Molby wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.
“I agree [with Ian Rush], though I would always add the caveat that any deal would have to be done at the right price, considering the player’s pedigree and age.
“To me, Williams looks like one of those players who just improves year upon year. I saw a lot of him last year and thought he was good, but he had a mistake in him.
“This year, he’s ironed that out. Whether it is because of the presence of Chico Flores – a very good defender – alongside him, or what, I’m not at all sure, but he looks better this season than he did last.
“He’s assured, even when he’s being put under pressure. He can play and he can graft. You don’t get many centre backs like that at the moment.”
