Aston Villa 1 Liverpool 2: Steven Gerrard hails his side's character after the Reds come from a goal down to win at Villa
Steven Gerrard hailed Liverpool’s character after the Reds came from a goal down to beat Aston Villa.
Brendan Rodgers’ men went in 1-0 down at the break after Christian Benteke’s 31st-minute opener at Villa Park.
But Jordan Henderson latched on to Philippe Coutinho’s superb through-ball and dinked a shot over Brad Guzan in the 47th minute.
And Gerrard scored a penalty on the hour mark after Nathan Baker tripped Luis Suarez in the box.
“We had to show a lot of character,” Gerrard told Sky Sports. “We had to raise it a little bit at half-time but we felt a little bit hard done by to be trailing at the break.
“We thought that after the first 45 minutes we should have been at least level. But we found ourselves one down so had to give an extra 10 per cent.
“The early goal in the second half gave us the belief and confidence to go on and win the game.”
The win keeps Liverpool in seventh place in the Premier League table and three points behind Everton, who have a game in hand on the Reds.
“We just want to win every game,” added Gerrard. “We want to finish as high as we can. We’ll try and maybe nick fifth or sixth.”
