Bayern Munich 0 Arsenal 2: Arsene Wenger pleased with Gunners display despite watching them bow out of Champions League
Arsene Wenger praised his Arsenal side for having “a great go” after their victory at Bayern Munich was not enough to prevent them bowing out of the Champions League.
Olivier Giroud gave the Gunners the perfect start when he turned home Theo Walcott’s fizzing cross in the third minute at the Allianz Arena.
However, despite a relatively solid defensive display from the north Londoners, they failed to cause Bayern enough problems in the final third until it was too late.
And Laurent Koscielny’s 86th-minute header was not enough to prevent the Bundesliga leaders from securing victory on away goals following their 3-1 triumph in London last month.
“I believe we were very, very close,” said Wenger. “We were unlucky a few times as well. I think about Gervinho’s chance and maybe one or two set pieces we could have done better.
“Overall, we had a great go. The regrets we have are from the first game when we conceded a very cheap goal in the last five minutes. If we had lost 2-1 at home you would see how important that goal was.
“I know these players, they have a fantastic attitude and spirit. We have the quality but unfortunately we have to go out of the Champions League.
“It hurts very much but the positives are the performance and the spirit.”
