Nuri Sahin has slammed Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers for playing the midfielder out of position during his disappointing spell at Anfield.

The Turkey international scored three goals in 12 appearances for the Reds after joining on a season-long loan from Real Madrid in August.

But Sahin’s Liverpool deal was terminated in January, with the 24-year-old joining his former club Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.

Despite admitting it was an honour to play for the five-time European champions, Sahin says he was frustrated by Rodgers’ decision to play him behind a striker – and not in his preferred holding role.

“Brendan Rodgers wanted me to play as a 10 but I do not play behind the forwards,” Sahin told Spanish newspaper AS.

“I spoke with him and asked him why I was playing there. It is not my real position. The boss could not answer me… still, I am not sorry about it.

“To play in the red jersey and be in Anfield is something marvellous.

“Maybe if I had not gone there I would not have been able to return to Borussia Dortmund. For that, I am happy.

“But I have left Brendan Rodgers, thanks be to God.”
