Harry Redknapp believes Chelsea supporters have a right to voice their opposition to Rafael Benítez’s reign despite the Queens Park Rangers boss sympathising with the Spaniard’s predicament.

On Wednesday, the 52-year-old Blues boss hit back at the Chelsea fans who have been voicing their anger at his appointment since November, while also criticising the club’s decision to hand him the job on a temporary basis.

Redknapp, who was touted as a candidate to replace Andre Villas-Boas at Stamford Bridge in March 2012, admits Benítez is facing a near-impossible job at Chelsea amid unwavering hostility.

“He’s been unfairly treated by some of the fans,” said Redknapp.

“But they’ve got some great fans as well at Chelsea. The minority always shout the loudest.

“They pay their money and they are entitled to their opinion – that’s what they pay for. But it is difficult for manager when you’re in the situation.

“The fans pay their money and have a right to voice their opinion, within reason.”

Redknapp, who is yet to watch Benítez’s latest rant, believes the Chelsea coach is a top manager and is coming under unfair pressure at the Champions League winners.

“I didn’t see the interview. He’s been put under pressure there since day one. He’s a top manager. His record tells us that,” he added.

“It must be difficult when you feel you’re not wanted all the time. It can’t be an easy situation. He does know what he’s doing, he is a top manager.”
