Martin Jol says his cut-price summer signings have proven to be great acquisitions as the Cottagers start to move clear of relegation danger.

The Dutchman snapped up Dimitar Berbatov, Ashkan Dejagah and Sacha Riether in the summer – and the trio have impressed for the west London side, who are currently 10th in the Premier League table.

The former Manchester United striker scored the opener at Sunderland on Saturday, with Dejagah adding a second, before the Black Cats recovered to secure a 2-2 draw.

And Jol believes that the Cottagers have still managed to buy quality without splashing out after watching his side move nine points clear of the drop zone.

“I got players I know very cheap,” said Jol.

“I saw Ashkan when I was in Germany. He was always talented – the only thing is he needs to be more productive in front of goal because he’s got a great shot and he never shoots.

“Riether was cheap, and Mladen Petric was the cheapest out of the three – he cost nothing.

“But if you go over there and want to buy another Edin Dzeko you would have to play £25m, that is not what we did.

“We tried to get them on the cheap but they are still good players. I get enormous satisfaction from that. We spent six or seven million and we can sell for a lot of money and we are still as good.”
