Tottenham Hotspur edged in the Europa League quarter-finals after Emmanuel Adebayor’s vital away goal secured an aggregate victory against Inter Milan at the San Siro.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg at White Hart Lane, the Serie A side stormed into a three-goal lead thanks to Antonio Cassano’s brace and Rodrigo Palacio’s well-taken strike.

However, Adebayor struck in extra time to leave Inter requiring a further two goals, with Ricardo Álvarez’s 110th-mintue strike insufficient to save Spurs.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to Tottenham’s aggregate win.

Former Tottenham chairman Lord Sugar ‏(@Lord_Sugar) is not enjoying the experience as Tottenham concede in the 20th minute: “Spurs look nervous tonight in Milan. They have let one in and I don’t have a good feeling. We need a goal, so far we have had no chances.”

Middlesbrough midfielder Josh McEachran ‏(@JMcEachran20) is enjoying the spectacle: “What a game this is going to be now!”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) is surprised by the north London side’s poor start: “Just through the door and see Spurs are 2-0 down… #squeekyBumTime”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) reckons we’ve learned a lesson from Bayern and Tottenham: “Teams with a first leg lead always get tentative. They get caught betwixt and between. Get a grip Spurs.”

Swansea midfielder Wayne Routledge (‏@WayneRoutledge) can’t quite believe what he’s seeing as Inter score a third: “What is going on at the San Siro..?”

Ireland defender Sean St Ledger ‏(@seanstledger12) is impressed by Inter’s little magician: “Cassano what a player!!”

Reading striker Noel Hunt (‏@boyhunt) wants to see Spurs score that crucial away goal: “OMG lucky, lucky Inter!!! Come on Spurs!!! Stay strong!!”

Former Norwich defender Iwan Roberts (‏@iwanwroberts) reckons Villas-Boas is paying for his comments: “Wow has AVB’s comment after the first leg come back to haunt him?! He thought they were through!”

Ex-Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright ‏(@Mark__Bright) reckons Spurs are missing a certain Welshman: “Struth… One man doesn’t make a team, but he sure makes a difference #Bale #thfc”

Former England cricket coach David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd ‏(@BumbleCricket) is enjoying the San Siro action ahead of day two in Wellington: “Spurs in a thriller ! 4-4 but have away goal!”

Arsenal fan Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) is clearly relishing his chance to heap misery on an old friend: “Hate to Inter-rupt such a wonderful match – just checking you’re OK, Shuggsy @Lord_Sugar ? #chokingcockerels”

Suspended Tottenham star Gareth Bale ‏(@GarethBale11) sums up the thoughts of most Spurs fans: “We don’t do it the easy way… well done lads #quarterfinals”

Finally, Liverpool striker Adam Morgan ‏(@AMorgan94) can be forgiven for wondering if the match has finished after a breath-taking 120 minutes: “Has Tottenham finished???”
