Jose Mourinho would make Chelsea world class again if the Portuguese coach were to return to Stamford Bridge, according to Harry Redknapp.

There has been mounting speculation suggesting Mourinho could leave Real Madrid in the summer, with the Blues and Paris Saint-Germain touted as a possible destination for the ex-Chelsea boss.

Mourinho, who led Chelsea to two Premier League titles during his spell in west London between 2004 and 2007, has made no secret of his desire to one day return to the English top flight.

And with interim coach Rafael Benítez set to step down at the end of the season, QPR boss Redknapp believes Mourinho would be able to turn the Blues into a side challenging for the top honours again if he were to take the reigns.

“Should he leave Real Madrid there are only one or two clubs over here which could possibly accommodate him,” Redknapp wrote in his column in the Sun.

“Of course, one of those is Chelsea. If Rafa Benítez leaves in the summer, then Mourinho is red-hot favourite to go back to the club where the fans still sing his name, back to an owner with lots of money and back to a squad which only needs a bit of tinkering with to become world class again.

“Look where he has been and what the clubs are like once he leaves. Inter are now a shadow of what it was when he was there. Chelsea have never been the consistent force they were in his day.”
