Liverpool 3 Tottenham 2: Jamie Carragher plays down top-four hopes
Liverpool 3 Tottenham 2: Jamie Carragher insists Reds are "not thinking about" a possible top-four finish despite impressive win
Jamie Carragher refused to get carried away about Liverpool’s chances of a top-four finish after the Reds came from behind to beat Tottenham at Anfield.
Luis Suárez netted his 22nd Premier League goal of the season when he flicked home Jose Enrique’s pass from close range to give Liverpool the lead at Anfield in the 21st minute.
But Jan Vertonghen nodded home Gareth Bale’s cross on the stroke of half-time to bring high-flying Tottenham back level.
The Spurs defender then handed the visitors the lead in the 53rd minute with an instinctive volley from inside the box.
However, a sloppy Kyle Walker back-pass allowed Stewart Downing to equalise in the 66th minute.
And Steven Gerrard slotted home his penalty to wrap up a victory after Benoit Assou-Ekotto fouled Suárez.
The win hoists Brendan Rodgers’ men up into sixth place in the Premier League table and seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
And Carragher said: “It’s something that we’d love to get [Champions League football] but at the moment we’re not really thinking about.
“We’re winning games and just concentrating on the next game. I’d say that with the way we’re playing and the results we’re getting, just carry on like that and see where we end up at the end of the season.”
He added: “The game turned around after the second goal. It’s not something we’ve done too often this season, coming from behind. It’s a massive win for us against a top team. We came through with character and quality to beat a top team like Tottenham.”
