Emile Heskey has urged Luis Suárez to stay at Liverpool because he feels that the Anfield club are “moving in the right direction”.

Suárez was quoted as saying he would be open to offers from clubs in the Champions League this summer as he considers his future at Liverpool.

But former Reds striker Heskey believes that Brendan Rodgers’ men are on their way to reclaiming a spot in Europe’s premier club competition and has urged the Uruguay forward to commit his future to the Merseysiders.

“It is difficult to keep hold of your best players when you fall out of the top five or six teams but fingers crossed he has a good think and he stays,” Heskey told talkSPORT.

“Liverpool is a massive club. They are going in the right direction so fingers crossed he can look at that and take them to the next step and back into the top four.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre played down the furore surrounding Suárez’s recent interview by insisting that he expects the striker to stay at the club.

“Last summer he signed a new four-year contract and we have no desire to sell Luis,” he said. “We are very pleased to have Luis and long may that continue.”

Suárez is the top scorer in the Premier League this season with 24 goals to his name, ahead of Robin van Persie and Gareth Bale.
