Liverpool’s Gerrard backs Coutinho to produce more moments of magic
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard says he expects even more "magical brilliance" from Brazilian youngster Philippe Coutinho next season
Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool will see even more “magical brilliance” from Philippe Coutinho next season.
The Brazil international has impressed since completing a £8.5m move to the Reds from Inter Milan in January, scoring his first goal for the club against Swansea City last month.
The 20-year-old midfielder has also created three goals for his team-mates in four Liverpool appearances.
Gerrard has been impressed by Coutinho’s start to life in the Premier League, but the Liverpool captain expects the South American to be even better next season with the benefit of a full pre-season under his belt.
“He’s got moments of magical brilliance,” Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.
“I think you’ll see the best of him next season when he gets a full pre-season under his belt and gets used to the speed of the game.
“But what he has shown for 55 or 60 minutes is that he’s a top player and he belongs in a Liverpool shirt.
“If we can get that for 90 minutes from him next season then he’s going to be a great asset for us.”
Liverpool defender Jose Enrique also heaped praise on Coutinho, with the Spaniard thrilled to see the former Inter star add some much-needed creativity to Brendan Rodgers’s side.
“The numbers speak for themselves, he already has two assists and one goal,” he said. “I hope he will continue like this for us – scoring goals and making assists.
“He is the type of player you have to have as a big team. He can create from nothing in a one v one situation. He is playing really well right now and he is the type of player we need.
“Defenders are important but you need people who can create and score goals and we have that now.”
