Liverpool transfers: Brendan Rodgers admits Reds must ‘build squad’
Liverpool transfers: Brendan Rodgers admits he will need to strengthen his squad in the summer after Reds slip to seventh
Brendan Rodgers admits he will need to strengthen his Liverpool squad in the summer transfer window if he is to guide the Reds back into the Champions League.
Rodgers’ side were beaten 3-1 at Southampton on Saturday to dent the Merseysiders’ chances of European qualification and leave them in seventh place in the Premier League table.
And the Northern Irishman says that Saturday’s defeat at St Mary’s was a wake-up call for his side after their good run of form was brought to a sudden halt.
“We’ve had a lot of plaudits in the last few weeks because of our goals and how we’ve been working, but today is a reminder for us that we still need to build our squad and look to improve,” said Rodgers after the loss to the Saints.
“The players have been brilliant – I can’t have asked [for] any more from them. You can’t be perfect every time you play.”
Rodgers also preferred not to discuss Liverpool’s chances of securing European football for next season with eight games left to play.
He added: “There are still a number of games to go. We’ve still got eight games. It’s just about us concentrating and keeping our focus on the next game. We can’t get too far ahead [of ourselves] – there’s still a lot of work to do here.”
