Sir Alex Ferguson has hit back at Roberto Mancini over his claim that Manchester United have been “lucky” this season.

The table-topping Red Devils are on course to prise the Premier League title away from Manchester City and currently hold a 12-point lead over their derby rivals with 11 games left to play.

City boss Mancini last week claimed that United “have been really lucky with everything” this term, saying that his side do not deserve to be so far behind Ferguson’s men.

But Ferguson laughed off the notion ahead of United’s clash with Norwich City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

“He’s lucky they are only 12 points behind,” Ferguson said. “Scoring late goals isn’t lucky, we’ve only been doing it for 25 years.”

Ferguson added: “The league games are even more important because we don’t want to give our opponents and advantage.

“The similarities to 1999 are that our FA Cup run was a hard one and our European ties were really hard. The group stage was okay [this year] but we got Real Madrid straight up.

“In the FA Cup we’ve had only Premier League teams, which we also experience in 1999. I don’t think the difficult games will be a problem.”
