Steven Gerrard has been Liverpool’s best player this season despite Luis Suárez’s outstanding strike-rate, according to former Reds defender Tommy Smith.

The Uruguay international has been widely tipped to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award after scoring an impressive 22 goals in 29 Premier League appearances this term.

However, Suárez’s captain Gerrard has rekindled some of his best form, with eight league goals and nine assists in the English top flight.

And Smith reckons the England international has been Brendan Rodgers’s best player since replacing Kenny Dalglish, despite Suárez’s impressive goal tally.

“Everyone is talking about Luis Suárez as a potential winner of Footballer of the Year but for me he’s only Liverpool’s second best player,” Smith wrote in his column in the Liverpool Echo.

“Suárez has scored a lot of goals this season but in terms of overall performances I still think Steven Gerrard has got the edge.

“Steven has played every minute of every league game which is amazing considering the injury problems he’d had over the previous two seasons.”

He added: “He has been so consistent over the course of the season and he keeps on doing it for the full 90 minutes – putting in tackles, starting attacks and scoring goals.”
