Luis Suárez believes Liverpool can launch a late bid for a top-four finish if the Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’s side have scored a combined nine goals without reply in their last two Premier League games against Swansea City and Wigan Athletic in the English top flight.

Liverpool’s successive victories have left them 12 points behind third-placed Tottenham, who edged to a 2-1 victory over rivals Arsenal last Sunday.

Despite the gap between the Reds and Spurs, Suárez reckons triumphing against Andre Villas-Boas’s side could inspire the Merseyside outfit to close the deficit and secure Champions League football for next season.

“We’ve been in good form recently and it’s a good opportunity to reduce the gap between ourselves and Spurs,” said Suárez.

“There is a slight chance we can make Champions League football – and if we want to do that, this is the sort of game we need to win.”

Suarez will be bidding to score his 22nd Premier League goal of the season against Spurs after the South American netted a sensational hat-trick at Wigan last weekend.

And Tottenham boss Villas-Boas believes Suárez’s strikes are carrying the Merseyside outfit this season.

“He’s a tremendous player — he’s making the difference,” said Villas-Boas.

“He’s a top player who is taking the team on his shoulders with his goal-scoring ability.

“He’s somebody we have to be wary of — he had a tremendous game at White Hart Lane in November.”
