Jose Mourinho admitted that “the best team lost” after watching his Real Madrid side beat 10-man Manchester United to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

After a goalless first half, the hosts went ahead when Sergio Ramos turned the ball into his own net in the 48th minute to give the Red Devils a 2-1 aggregate lead.

But United were reduced to 10 men when Nani was controversially shown a straight red card by referee Cuneyt Cakir in the 56th minute.

The Portugal winger’s foot was high as he went into an aerial challenge with Alvaro Arbeloa but he had his eye on the ball at all times and a fuming Sir Alex Ferguson vented his frustration on the touchline.

The game then swung in Madrid’s favour, as substitute Luka Modric netted a stunning long-range drive, before Cristiano Ronaldo slid in at the far post to turn home Gonzalo Higuain’s teasing low cross to wrap up a 3-2 aggregate win for Los Blancos.

Mourinho told ITV1: “Independent of the decision [to send Nani off], the best team lost. We didn’t play well, we didn’t deserve to win but football is like this.

“I’m not speaking about the decision because I’m not sure about it. But independent of that, the best team lost.”
