Man United legend Gary Neville: Old Trafford ‘shocked’ by Nani red card
Former Man United defender Gary Neville says Old Trafford was left in unprecedented disbelief after Nani's sending off on Tuesday
Gary Neville says Old Trafford was left in disbelief following Nani’s sending off as Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese winger was issued with a straight red for a dangerous tackle on Álvaro Arbeloa in the second half, less than 10 minutes after Sergio Ramos’s own goal had given the Red Devils the lead.
With United down to 10 men, Madrid capitalised on their slice of good fortune, as Luka Modrić and Cristiano Ronaldo secured a 3-2 aggregrate win and Los Blancos’ place in the last eight.
And Neville admitted it was the first time that he had witnessed United’s home ground in such visible shock at a refereeing decision.
The former Red Devils right-back tweeted: “Been going to OT since age of 5 and I’ve never seen the whole ground as in disbelief as they were last night at a decision!
“Nani is a player who regularly tries to control a pass like this over his shoulder and it’s never a red card! Changed the whole game! Poor ref.
“The crowd actually weren’t angry / weren’t shouting they were just open mouthed and in shock!”
“The Madrid keeper on Vidic looked a similar type of incident,” Neville added.
“Anyway it won’t be the first time or last! Just ruined a fascinating match and didn’t feel right to Utd or Madrid people in the stadium!”
