Nemanja Vidic claims that Cristiano Ronaldo “misses” Manchester United and insists he would not be surprised to see the Portugal international secure a transfer back to Old Trafford.

The Real Madrid forward is gearing up to take on his former club for the second time on Tuesday after netting his side’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu last month.

And speaking ahead of United’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Madrid, defender Vidic admitted that he would “love” to see the 28-year-old seal a permanent move back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

“He [Ronaldo] is a United supporter and still follows United, he still misses the club and the environment here, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come back,” Vidic is quoted as saying by the Daily Telegraph.

“It would be a big ask for many reasons, but I would love to see him here.

“I don’t know what atmosphere he has at Madrid, so I can’t really talk about that, but all I can say is that I enjoyed playing with him, he enjoyed it here and it will be great to see him.”

Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games during his six-year spell at United before sealing a £80m transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Champions League statistics

• Ronaldo played in two Champions League finals with United. He scored in the 1-1 draw against Carvalho and Essien’s Chelsea in Moscow in 2008, where United triumphed on penalties although Ronaldo failed from the spot. Twelve months later, his final United appearance ended in defeat by Barcelona in Rome.

• Cristiano Ronaldo is the joint top scorer in this season’s Champions League after seven matches with seven goals. The Portuguese international has found the net 16 times in his last 14 Champions League appearances.

• Ronaldo, who has played every minute of Madrid’s campaign, has had 31 attempts on target and 15 wide, both more than any other player. Madrid have had more shots on goal (88) and wide (60) than any other team.
