Phil Jones is still a serious doubt for Manchester United’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid next week, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed.

The defender suffered an ankle injury against Reading in February and has been sidelined since that 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Ferguson revealed that Jones was set to begin light training on Friday as he bids to recover in time for the visit of the La Liga giants on Tuesday.

“Phil Jones starts running today,” said Ferguson. “He’s got a fight on his hands to be ready for Tuesday [Real Madrid] but we’ll give him every chance. He won’t be available for tomorrow [Norwich].

The Manchester United boss also revealed that Robin van Persie is fit for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Norwich City after recovering from a hip injury suffered at Queens Park Rangers last weekend.

He added: “We have no injury issues. Robin van Persie has trained this week – he’s available for tomorrow. His hip was very tender but he’s OK now.

“Tomorrow is an important one because Tuesday will look after itself. It’s an occasion on Tuesday whereas tomorrow is the mundane practical situation in that we need to win.”
