Ryan Giggs was the toast of Twitter after the Manchester United veteran penned a one-year contract extension on the eve of his 1000th senior appearance for club and country.

The former Wales international, who will turn 40 in November, is set to continue playing until the summer of 2014 as he looks to add to his 12 Premier League titles, two European Cups and four FA Cups.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction to Giggs’s new deal from his current and former team-mates and the general football world.

Retired Red Devils goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (‏@vdsar1970) pays tribute to his old team-mate: “Never been ill that many times during my playing career that lasted 22 years! #Giggs going on for another year #Manutd! #Legend”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) praises United’s age-defying star: “Ryan Giggs signs for another year at MUFC. A quite extraordinary achievement. The man is defying Father time.”

Former Middlesbrough star Jan Aage Fjortoft ‏(@JanAageFjortoft) reckons his grandchildren will face the eternally youthful midfielder: “I said am looking forward to tell my grandchildren that I played with Giggs. CORRECTION! My grandchildren will play against him too. #MUFC

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) reckons Giggs is the Premier League’s greatest-ever: “To stay at a club like Man Utd for so long.. play at the level he has.. win the amount he has.. surely the prems greatest ever player?? #Giggs”

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan (‏@MichaelVaughan) agrees with Morris: “The greatest ever Premier League player signs another one-year deal… Played in his teens, 20s, 30s and now 40s… #Giggs”

And all on a special day for the Welsh, as Gareth Bale ‏(@GarethBale11) reminds us:
“Morning everyone! About to head into training, have a great St David’s Day!”
