Harry Redknapp insists he won’t lose any sleep over the thought of Southampton supporters’ abuse on Saturday – but warned his wife to cancel his birthday plans should Queens Park Rangers leave St Mary’s without a positive result.

The Hoops manager, who was presented with a birthday cake at his media conference at Harlington on Friday, will celebrate his 66th birthday by taking his QPR side to former club Southampton.

Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino has already warned Redknapp to expect a volatile reception at the south coast club after the QPR manger failed to steer the Saints to safety in 2004-05 campaign.

Redknapp left Southampton and returned to Portsmouth in December 2005, leaving many Saints fans apoplectic at a perceived lack of loyalty.

“I’ll get a bit of grief – that’s no problem,” said Redknapp.

“They’re not bad people at Southampton. I wouldn’t say Southampton supporters are nasty or aggressive.

“They’re good people. They’ll give me a bit of grief but that’s life. I’ll accept that. I won’t lose any sleep over that – the only thing I’ll lose sleep over is the result.”

Redknapp was not surprised to see Southampton climb from League One to the Premier League, insisting the club was too big to languish in the lower leagues for long.

And the 66-year-old expects the Saints to have a bright future under their ambitious young manager, who can tap into one of the best youth systems in England.

“It’s been a top club for years… since the days of Mick Channon and Ron Davis,” added Redknapp.

“They’ve had good teams for years and years. Now they look a very good team from what I’ve seen this year.

“They produce good young players – Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Nathan Dyer – and there’s an awful lot of other players who’ve come out of that youth system. They’re still doing it at the moment.”
