Rafael Benítez gives fitness update on captain John Terry
Rafael Benítez says John Terry still working to improve his fitness ahead of Chelsea's clash with Southampton on Saturday
Rafael Benítez has revealed that John Terry is still working to improve his fitness ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Southampton on Saturday.
The Blues captain has been in and out of the Chelsea side in recent weeks after failing to hold down a regular spot since picking up a knee injury against Liverpool back in November.
But after almost two weeks off thanks to the international break, the Chelsea boss is happy with the centre-half’s progress.
“He was training with us this week and he was doing well,” Benítez told a news conference on Thursday. “I’m really pleased with his evolution.
“In terms of the injury, he’s training every day and improving his fitness. We will have four games in nine days so it’s the same for everyone – he cannot play all of these games. But it’s not just him, [it’s] everyone.”
The Spaniard also revealed that he had no fresh injury concerns following the international break, but said Gary Cahill (knee) and Ramires (groin) face late fitness tests ahead of Saturday’s trip to St Mary’s.
“The players that were playing with the national teams are fine,” he said. “Cahill and Ramires are still working with the physios.
“Still we have a couple of days [before the game], we will see. They could be available but it will be close.”
