Paul Lambert warned Aston Villa’s relegation rivals that his side are brimming with confidence after watching them come from behind to beat Reading and record just their second league win of the year.

Villa fell behind in the 31st minute at the Madjeski Stadium after Nathan Baker turned the ball past his own goalkeeper.

But Christian Benteke hit back less than 60 seconds later to level the score, before Gabriel Agbonlahor’s powerful volley on the stroke of half-time gave the visitors a crucial three points.

The win hoists Lambert’s men out of the relegation zone and into 17th place in the table, three points clear of Wigan, who have played a game less.

“It is never easy at the best of times with the position we are in, but the lads were fantastic today, we deserved to win,” said Lambert.

“To lose an own goal was a blow but the way we bounced back was terrific and I am very proud of my players tonight, they deserve so much credit.

“I see a lot of confidence in the players, they have been playing really well without the rewards.

“The goals that we scored today were excellent, we don’t look like a team that looks like it is fighting for its life.

“There will probably be a few teams looking over their shoulder tonight and we have a bit of momentum at the minute.”
