Real Madrid 2 Barcelona 1: Blancos gear up for European clash with win
Real Madrid 2 Barcelona 1: Sergio Ramos struck late on at the Bernabeu to give his side another victory over their arch rivals
Real Madrid prepared for their European encounter with Manchester United in ideal fashion as they saw off arch rivals Barcelona to continue the Camp Nou outfit’s run of poor form.
Madrid got off to the perfect start, with Álvaro Morata justifying his inclusion in Jose Mourinho’s team immediately. The young forward, who joined Luka Modric, Michael Essien and Kaká in a much changed Madrid side, slid in a low cross which was turned in by Karim Benzema. It was a goal that brought a positive note to what has otherwise been a tough week for the France international.
However, Barcelona drew level soon after when Lionel Messi cut inside Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and fired a low shot underneath goalkeeper Diego López.
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo had been left on the bench with next Tuesday’s Champions League assignment in mind, but he was brought on after an hour to huge cheers from the home support.
And, with 10 minutes remaining, Madrid defender Sergio Ramos sealed a second straight win against their Catalan rivals with a superb header from a Luka Modric corner.
There was drama at the end as Barcelona were convinced that Brazilian full-back Adriano was fouled in the Real penalty area – but referee Miguel Ángel Perez Lasa was unmoved.
Following the final whistle, Barça’s frustrations boiled over as Victor Valdes was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for dissent.
