Manchester United continued their march towards a 13th Premier League title after Titus Bramble’s own goal secured a 1-0 Red Devils triumph at Sunderland.

The Black Cats centre-half deflected Robin van Persie’s shot past his goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in the 27th minute to hand Sir Alex Ferguson’s side the three points.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order, to United’s win.

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) is impressed by clinical Van Persie: “Everything Van Persie touches goes in. On fire.”

Doncaster Rovers striker David cotterill ‏(@cotterill_david) is thrilled to see the Red Devils in the lead: “Come on United!! #rvp”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (‏@morriskid) reckons Michael Carrick deserves more praise: “Whoever used to question Michael Carrick..dry slap yourself in the grid.”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) reckons Van Persie’s strike is actually a Bramble own goal: “Not one who supports taking goals away from strikers, but think RVP will struggle to claim that one. Bramble own goal.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann) can’t understand why Adam Johnson is upset to be taken off: “Does anybody know why Adam Johnson shook his head when he came off?

Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) offers his take: “RT ‘@DietmarHamann: Does anybody know why Adam Johnson shook his head when he came off?’ < The screw is loose.” Olympian and United fan Dai Greene ‏(@DaiGreene) is looking forward to Saturday’s highlights despite a drab game: “MOTD will have plenty to cover, loads of Saturday fixtures.”

United defender Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) praises Patrice Evra’s stand-in: “Alex Buttner was nice today but Carrick was standout for me. Nice three points that now roll on Monday!”

Former Aston Villa midfielder Ian Taylor ‏(@IanTaylor7) reckons the Black Cats are embroiled in the relegation scrap: “Just watched #MUFC beat #safc out here in Gothenburg. They’re in it with the rest of us big time. Roll on tomorrow. Lets get a result! #AVFC”

Finally former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (‏@vdsar1970) is pleased to see his former side keep a clean sheet: “Clean sheets wins you titles as we know at #Manutd! Didn’t see the game but 18 points clear and our neighbours next week at home! #titleback Only thing that I didn’t expect was @D_DeGea being so close to my record clean sheets! Having defenders like @rioferdy5 and Vidic helps a lot!”
