Lionel Messi’s dazzling brace set Barcelona on their way to victory as the La Liga side pegged back AC Milan to reach the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-2 aggregate win.

With Milan leading 2-0 from the first leg, Messi hit a superb double before the break – and strikes from David Villa and Jordi Alba completed the comeback for the La Liga leaders.

M’Baye Niang was guilty of spurning the visitors’ best chance of scoring an away goal when his effort bounced off the post in the first half but Barcelona were more than worthy winners in the end.

Here is some of the reaction from the professionals past and present to an enthralling Champions League last-16 tie.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville (‏@GNev2) is stunned by Messi’s incredible opener: “That is staggeringly brilliant!!”

As is ex-England forward Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker): “Oh Messi! That’s just too good.”

Liverpool’s Lucas Leiva (‏@LucasLeiva87) is lost for words: “Wow”

And so is Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul ‏(@TimKrul): “Messi #wow”

Stoke City forward Michael Owen ‏(@themichaelowen) is predicting a long night for the visitors at Camp Nou: “Oh my god! Game on! Messi has just scored a belter. Could be a long night for AC.”

Ex-Milan midfielder Ruud Gullit (‏@GullitR) voices his support for his former employers: “Forza #Milanac. Going to be a difficult game but I hope they get through”

Tottenham youngster Alex Pritchard (‏@pritch_93) reacts after Messi’s second: “Niang misses …… MESSI DON’T !”

Doncaster Rovers winger David Cotterill ‏(@cotterill_david) is amazed by the four-time Ballon d’Or winner: “This guy messi is a joke how good he is! So clinical #ChampionsLeague”

Ryan Babel ‏(@RyanBabel) recalls Robin van Persie’s sending off at Camp Nou after Alexis Sanchez puts the ball in the net after the whistle has blown for offside: “I remember V Persie got a yellow card for not hearing the whistle at Camp Nou in his Arsenal days..”

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) offers his thoughts after the game: “The wingers are the big difference in the way Barca have played tonight compared to the last couple of weeks…total football!

Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) believes Messi is the best he’s ever seen: “I saw a lot of Maradona and played against him. Wonderful though he was, Messi is better and so much more consistent.”

Robbie Savage ‏(@RobbieSavage8) thinks the odds have been slashed on the La Liga club winning the title: “Huge miss from Niang, but Barca and Messi are now favourites!”

QPR’s Jay Bothroyd (‏@jaybothroyd) is pleased: “I’m so happy Attack beat defence.”

And finally, pundit Lee Dixon ‏(@LeeDixon2) responds to some of the stick he got as a result of his questionable eyewear on ITV1: “Just for the point of clarity I can’t see from up here! Forgot to take them off!”
