Rodgers: Liverpool ready to capitalise on any slip-ups in top-four race
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his side will be ready to capitalise on any slip-ups by their top-four rivals
Brendan Rodgers insists that Liverpool are ready to capitalise on any slip-ups by their rivals as the battle for a top-four finish hots up.
The Reds gave their European aspirations a major boost with a 3-2 victory over third-placed Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield last Sunday.
Rodgers’ side are now two points behind Arsenal, who occupy the Europa League spot, and a further seven behind Chelsea in fourth.
And the Liverpool manager is drawing confidence from his side’s recent results – a 5-0 win against Swansea and a 4-0 victory at Wigan before their Spurs triumph – ahead of their trip to Southampton on Saturday.
“Our recent run of form will show that we’re a team which is improving and developing,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.
“The win against Tottenham showed further enhancement of that. The teams above will know they can’t be making any slip-ups, not only because of us but for themselves.
“This is the stage of the season when you want to win games. We can only concentrate on ourselves and get as many victories as we can.
“People know now that we’re a different team compared to the start of the season. There is a different mentality since the turn of the year when we got another two players in Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.
“Anyone watching the team regularly will see the amount of difference but there is still a lot of work to do.
“We have to concentrate and make sure we keep doing what we’ve done in this period. That’s the hard work, the dirty work and earning the right to play.
“We know that if we work the way we have done in games and make no mistakes then we’re going to be a real threat going forward.”
