Southampton’s Jason Puncheon backs Nigel Adkins for Reading job
Southampton forward Jason Puncheon says former boss Nigel Adkins would be a good choice to become new Reading manager
Jason Puncheon has backed former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins to become Reading’s next manager.
The Royals, who are 19th in the Premier League, sacked Brian McDermott on Monday evening after suffering a 2-1 loss to relegation rivals Aston Villa in their last outing.
Adkins received the chop at the Saints in January after guiding the south coast club to successive promotions from League One and the Championship.
And Southampton forward Puncheon reckons Adkins, who left the Saints in 15th place, would be a great candidate to fill the void left by McDermott at Reading.
“Reading’s out there for him I suppose,” Puncheon told Sky Sports News. “His name is getting touted about and I think he can do a job for them.
“Nigel’s proved that while he was here [at Southampton] and I think he will get another job and I do wish him all the best when he does get that.”
Puncheon also believes Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese sacked Adkins in favour of hiring Mauricio Pochettino in a bid to guide the club into Europe.
“Nigel took the club to where it wanted to get to, the Premier League, but the club has ambitions to get European football and that’s what we need to do,” added Puncheon.
“We have got the players to do that, we’ve got good young players and players getting into their prime and that is what we have to do – take it to the next level.”
