Missing out on a Europa League spot for next season would be “the best thing” for Liverpool, according to former Reds defender Steve Nicol.

Brendan Rodgers’ men slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Southampton on Saturday as their hopes of securing European football for next season were dealt a blow, with the loss leaving them in seventh place in the Premier League table with eight games left to play.

However, Nicol, who won five league titles with the Reds during a decorated Anfield career, believes that not having to compete in Europe’s second tier club competition would allow the Merseysiders to focus on improving their domestic form.

“If they don’t get into the Europa League next season it will be the best thing for them,” Nicol told talkSPORT. “They need to concentrate in the league.

“After watching them away from home at Southampton, I don’t think they’ll get that fifth.”

Liverpool travel to Aston Villa on 31 March for their next league game after the international break.
