Robin van Persie insisted Manchester United’s winner should go down as his goal after the Red Devils took another step towards the title with victory at Sunderland.

The Dutchman, who had not scored since 10 February for United heading into the game, saw his shot from the left fly into the net after taking a deflection of Titus Bramble’s knee in the 27th minute.

The strike was recorded as a Bramble own-goal but Van Persie was adamant it should have been credited to him.

When asked by Sky Sports if the goal should go down as his, he replied: “Of course, no question about it.

“You could see that it’s been a while [since he scored] so it’s always good to score again. It was an important goal and today was all about the three points.”

United stretched their lead at the top of the table to 18 points with Saturday’s win ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Newcastle.

And Van Persie was thrilled to see his side come away with the three points after a “tough” game at the Stadium of Light.

“We got the three points and we knew before that it was going to be tough,” he added. “Away at Sunderland is always very hard. We had to dig in but we did that. Everyone worked hard for a well-deserved win.

“This team, if you ask me, is just full of winners. Everyone here knows what they have to do. I was always confident that we would win this game.”
