Sir Alex Ferguson claimed Robin van Persie’s goals for the Netherlands during the international break have helped him find his scoring touch after Manchester United’s win at Sunderland.

The 29-year-old scored twice against Romania and once against Estonia to help his national side record World Cup qualifying victories last week.

And Van Persie’s deflected shot won United the game at the Stadium of Light as the Red Devils opened up an 18-point lead at the top of the table.

Ferguson told Sky Sports: “I think that scoring for Holland in the two internationals has helped him.

“Goal-scorers are like that; when you don’t score for two or three games they start to wonder if they’ll ever score again and then when they do score they get back on a run.”

Van Persie’s shot from the left in the 27th minute went down as a Titus Bramble own-goal after it flew into the net off the Sunderland defender’s knee.

“They’re making a case for an own-goal but I thought it was a fantastic shot,” added Ferguson. “I don’t know whether it was going in.”

Ferguson, whose side take on Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-final replay on Monday, praised his side’s battling spirit after taking another step towards a 20th top-flight title.

He added: “It was an important win, it means we go into the Manchester City game with at least a 15-point lead.

“The players have galvanised themselves with their team spirit, concentration and focus. It’s 25 wins in 30 league games and it’s all down to the efforts of the players.

“We’ve got to win four games to get there but the important thing is to focus on the next match and that’s Manchester City at home.”
