Arsene Wenger hailed Arsenal’s fighting spirit after watching his side boost their hopes of Champions League qualification with victory at Swansea.

January signing Nacho Monreal broke the deadlock in the 74th minute when he fired home a low shot to net his first goal for his new club.

And Aaron Ramsey linked up with fellow second-half substitute Gervinho for the Ivorian to wrap up a win in stoppage time and move the Gunners two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table.

“I came out many times and said I’m a great admirer of the attitude of this team,” Wenger said.

“I think to win a big game on Wednesday night transformed the belief of the team a little bit.

“We’ve struggled during the season to find that and I think you could see today again that you cannot question the attitude of these players.

“The solidarity they showed are qualities that will be needed until the last day of the season.

“The attitude of our players and our team was outstanding. Even when the legs were a bit less fresh, we kept going and refused to drop points.”

Wenger’s side are now fifth in the table with nine games left to play – and the Frenchman admits that the north Londoners had to win at the Liberty Stadium to keep their pursuit of a top-four finish intact.

“We’ll know [how important the victory was] at the end of the season,” he added. “The win was absolutely wanted from us. We couldn’t drop points today to have a chance – we are in that situation.

“We have shown as well that we are up for a fight and we will do that until the end of the season.”

Arsenal host Reading in their next league game on 30 March, after the international break.
