Andre Villas-Boas hailed Gylfi Sigurdsson’s display after watching his Tottenham Hotspur side move back up to third in the Premier League table with victory over Arsenal.

First-half goals from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon put the hosts 2-0 up before Per Mertesacker’s header halved the deficit shortly after half-time.

But Villas-Boas’s men held firm to secure a vital victory in the race for Champions League qualification.

And the Portuguese coach singled out Sigurdsson for special praise after the Icelandic midfielder capped an impressive display by setting up Bale for Spurs’ opener.

“There were a lot of great individual performances,” said Villas-Boas.

“The midfield worked very hard and we did our tasks properly. The players were inspired because they wanted to achieve the objective which was to get this win, which is great for everyone.

“Gylfi had a great game, he was fantastic and it’s great to see him breaking into a good run of form now

Villas-Boas added: “Other players too, the pair at the back, Benoit [Assou-Ekotto] was absolutely fantastic, Lennon and Bale. It was a great team performance.”
