Sam Allardyce hailed Andy Carroll’s “best” West Ham performance after the Hammers secured a comfortable victory over West Bromwich Albion.

Carroll, who joined West Ham on a season-long loan from Liverpool in August, broke the deadlock with a powerful header in the 16th minute.

Gary O’Neill doubled the east London side’s advantage on the half-hour mark and Carroll completed his brace with 10 minutes remaining at Upton Park.

West Brom striker Romelu Lukaku did win a late penalty for the visitors, which Graham Dorrans tucked past Jussi Jaaskelainen, but the Hammers held on to move six points clear of 18th-placed Aston Villa.

“The points are more important than anything else but the performance and the fact that we won comfortably shows how good we have been at home all season. The quality of the goals show that,” Allardyce told BBC Sport.

“Andy Carroll scored the goal of the season for us, it was a fantastic goal, a world-class finish. He scored two today and it was his best performance.”

Meanwhile, West Brom manager Steve Clarke urged his side, who are eighth in the Premier League table, to finish the season in style after suffering their ninth defeat on the road.

“We knew it would be a difficult game, and in the first half they were a little bit better than us. The goals we conceded are not like us,” he said.

“We started the game quite well, but there are small margins in this game. After being 1-0 down, we had a difficult afternoon.

“There are not been too many times this season that we have felt like this. We have seven games left and we want to finish on a high.”
