Wigan 1 Norwich 0: We showed character to secure win – Martínez
Wigan 1 Norwich 0: Roberto Martínez says his side's win was down to their character as the Latics moved out of the drop zone
Roberto Martínez hailed Wigan Athletic’s character after the Latics battled to a narrow victory over Norwich City at the DW Stadium.
With Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers both playing later this weekend, Martínez’s men had the chance to move clear of the relegation zone by virtue of their superior goal difference.
The Latics struggled throughout the encounter despite winning their last two fixtures and Chris Hughton’s men claiming just one victory in their last 13 outings.
Arouna Kone came closest for Wigan, with Norwich keeper Lee Camp and the woodwork both spuring the African, while Bradley Johnson squandered the visitors’s best chance.
But it was Wigan’s Senegalese striker who scored the crucial winner in the 81st minute, with a powerful low shot, taking Kone’s tally to 10 for the season and moving the Latics into 17th place.
“Today was about character – the players worked extremely hard,” Martínez told BBC Sport.
“We stopped Norwich from having a shot on target. We weren’t at our most fluent or sharpest, but found a way to win.
“The win was down to the character of the team.”
