Andre Villas-Boas says Arsenal’s bid for Champions League qualification is being boosted by “belief” drawn from their experience in recent seasons.

Winning their game in hand would allow Arsenal to leapfrog their north London rivals into fourth place in the Premier League table following their victory at West Brom and Spurs’ draw with Everton on Sunday.

The Gunners overturned a 10-point deficit to Tottenham last season to end up third and book their place in the Champions League group stage.

And Villas-Boas believes that Arsene Wenger’s men are drawing confidence from their strong finishes in recent campaigns as they look to pip Spurs to a Champions League spot this term.

“The reality is that Arsenal feel their belief is because they finish seasons very strongly and that belief helps them,” said Villas-Boas after the 2-2 draw with Everton at White Hart Lane.

“We don’t look at ghosts in the past. We try to do our job properly. We want to win games. It [the Everton draw] was nothing to do with our tiredness.

“Arsenal’s game in hand is against Everton, so something is going to happen.

“Everton probably have the toughest calendar and we probably have the second-worst with matches against Manchester City and Chelsea. I think it depends on those results.”
